I have ran into a problem I don't understand. My John Deere 870 4 wheel drive was doing fine (it also has the loader on it). I parked it under the shed and now I went to use it and it will not go in gear when you press the clutch! Trying to put it in gear the tractor will try to move and doesn't even make a gear scraping sound. The double clutch works fine putting the mower pto or rear pto. If I put it in the lowest gear speed I am able to get it going but when you push in the clutch it won't stop! I looked underneath and no plate to even take off to see the clutch. I have tried it in 4 wheel drive and out, still the same. All is adjusted properly it looks like and no linkages are loose. This tractor has 740 hrs. on it. Is the clutch stuck together? If so what can I do? Please help. Thanks.

If it was fine when you put it in there and didn't run it for some time the answer is yes. Normally my first atempt is to start it in gear and than give it the throttle and depress the clutch and jam on the brakes hard.. It is best to do it in a higher gear and that will normally free the clutch up. You might need to do it a couple of times. You don't need to run it down low enough to stall the tractor just do it again until it breaks free. I do wonder with the pto being so easy which it can be if you might not have a bad clutch! I've replaced clutches with less houurs. ....

Art, thanks a lot for your fast response! Wasn't but a min. there I was out there and tried what you said. Put it in medium range 3rd. gear and got it going down hill, made it to a small drive we have and opened the throttle like you said and hit the brakes. It took only once! Almost shoulda had my seatbelt on!!!!! Thanks a million. It works fine now. It had probably been only a week since I used it last, it has been raining and damp, but recon some water could have made it stick or moisture? Or what makes them stick. It doesn't slip and still has the same pedal length as far as easing off. Thanks again. Anything I might can help you with let me know! I live here in Blacksburg, SC. Steve ....

Art's solution is one we all use, but I blew out the rear differential gears in a Yanmar YM1720D doing just that. Something has to give, and generally it is the clutch. The 20 series Yanmars have great brakes...unfortunately. I still use the method, but much more gently. If it does not come unstuck there is generally an access port on the bellhousing. I put a punch in the hole and gently tap on the clutch disk with a hammer. Then I try the brake trick again. Learn from my mistake! Dave ....

Hello Dave, I have looked everywhere under there and dont even see a bell housing? No hole nothing. Everything under there is solid iron and sealed up. Have any idea where it is on the jd 870? Remember it is 4 wheel drive. Thanks. Also forgot to mention, about 2 weeks ago we had a hard rain, had to go down to the pond to unstop the drain and got in water rushing under it,, did it get in there somehow? Any help appreciated as I have no manual with this tractor. Thanks.

Not sure on the JD's, but a lot of Yanmars have a rubber plug on the left side of what we would call the bellhousing area. Some use an access hole that is covered by a small metal plate with two bolts holding it on. It is normally on the left side. There really isn't a "bellhousing", so I should more properly call it a clutch housing. Rust is the problem. Sometimes it happens just by sitting for a while due to moisture. Most Yanmars have a lever to lock the clutch pedal down to prevent this from happening. The JD might, if not, use a block of wood. ....

Thanks Dave, I went back and looked and looked like a screen with the 2 bolts on the right side but have to remove the foot rest to get it off. Does sure look like there would be a drain hole! I suppose if water got in it will evoprate. I used a lawn mower bade to hold the clutch down until I can cut me a 2x4! It fit perfect from the clutch to the loader! Thanks for the tip. Maybe if I stay out of the flooded creek I won't have any more trouble! Hopefully what rust got there will wear off being I caught it in time. Thanks again. Steve ....
